Mediation is a process where a neutral person, called a mediator, meets with the different parties in a legal dispute and explores settlement options. Mediation is confidential, and the parties can freely discuss settlement offers and counteroffers without fear that such offers could be used against them later. Mediators in Florida are certified by the Florida Supreme Court and undergo specialized training in dispute resolution. Most cases that are in the Court System will eventually be court ordered to undergo mediation. The process has proven effective, with the overwhelming majority of cases that undergo mediation reaching settlement at or shortly after the mediation conference.
